To ensure that design criteria are met, unknown conditions are detected and potentially costly setbacks and dangers are avoided, SJB provides a system of controls through testing and inspection procedures that are essential to the stability and performance of the project.

SJB/Empire is a member of the American Council of Independent Laboratories (ACIL), inspected by the Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL), and is the only NVLAP (National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program) Certified Construction Materials Testing Laboratory in Upstate New York. Our technicians maintain numerous certifications including ICC (concrete masonry, and fireproofing ), NETTCP (NorthEast Transportation Training and Certification Program), NICET Level I-II, ACI Field Technician Grade I and Grade II Construction Inspector, Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) and Concrete Laboratory Technician Grades I and II. In addition, each technician has been properly trained and certified in the operation of nuclear density gauges.

Materials Laboratory Services:

  • Compressive strength testing of concrete cylinders and cores, mortar & grout specimens, rock cores, and masonry units
  • Concrete mix design and evaluation
  • Masonry unit compliance testing
  • Soils classification and index tests including: grain size analysis, maximum density/optimum moisture (proctor) tests, Atterberg limits, specific gravity, water content, organic content, and pH
  • Soil strength testing, including consolidation tests, triaxial compressive strength, unconfined compressive strength, and CBR tests, along with soil and aggregate permeability testing
  • Asphalt properties testing
